Florida school clamps down on filesharers

December 3rd, 2007 by vanalli

In a bid to stop further cases of students being sued for filesharing, the University of South Florida in Tampa has announced the implementation of a $75,000 program designed to block illegal filesharing on campus.

The move comes after the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) consistently ranked the university as one of the worst filesharing offenders in the US. Free, illegal music downloads are now set to stop thanks to this “Red Lambda” software, which the University of Central Florida is also testing at the moment.

Florida Atlantic University already has software and equipment set up to block students from filesharing. Its $500,000 software costs $50,000 a year to maintain.

All this is in response to the RIAA announcing that it is targeting university campuses where excessive filesharing goes on. Schools have been sent letters warning them to identify offending users and offering out-of-court settlements of between $3,000 and $5,000.

Red Lambada blocks all unauthorized filesharing. It must suck to be a student in the US right now.
