Limewire installed on one third of world’s PCs

Here’s some news that should convince any doubters out there about the status of filesharing as an entity that cannot be contained. Digital Music News and BigChampagne released the findings of a study into filesharing, revealing that one third of all PCs in the world have the filesharing program Limewire installed on them.

It seems that there is nothing the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) can do to stop Limewire, which is used on 36.4% of the world’s PCs. Although Limewire is the clear front runner in the world of P2P filesharing, its growth this year was just 2.3% from last year.

Although growth has been minimal over the past 12 months, Limewire is to filesharing what iTunes is to paid music downloads. Limewire is currently unrivalled in the P2P filesharing world and only a major ruling closing Limewire down is going to stop it. Despite Limewire losing out in a federal court battle with the RIAA, Internet users are still keen to use the service.

Clearly, all the commotion that goes on between Limewire and the music industry is greeted with disinterest by users of Limewire.
