Man jailed for filesharing crime

March 19th, 2008 by vanalli

We all know that filesharing can land you in hot water for getting your free music downloads, but I bet you never realized that you could have your identity stolen and lose all your money by using a filesharing program. That’s exactly what happened to users of filesharing program Limewire recently.

Gregory Kopiloff used Limewire to hack into other people’s computers and steal financial information to get access to their money. He was recently sentenced to four years and three months in prison for his filesharing crimes.

His only justification for this slightly odd use of Limewire was that he needed the money for drugs and gambling. Users of Limewire should certainly be careful or else they might end up like Gregory Kopiloff’s filesharing victims.

It’s unclear what users of Limewire can do to prevent such things from happening in the future. No word from Limewire on what allowed such an occurrence to happen.
