Morpheus troubles mean Ares new download king

December 6th, 2007 by vanalli

The filesharing service Morpheus has run into a number of problems over the years. After pioneering P2P filesharing in the early 2000s, Morpheus’ reign as the most-used filesharing software in the world has sadly come to an end.

The most recent problem that Morpheus has run into was a court ruling siding with the RIAA in an ongoing, six-year battle between the music industry and StreamCast, the company that develops and distributes Morpheus.

The court ruling stated that StreamCast had to come up with more effective filtering techniques for Morpheus to stop users downloading pirated software. Until recently, Morpheus users were restricted by keyword filters. Currently, Morpheus is using a system with which any user who attempts to download a pirated file is redirected to a website where the file can be bought legally.

Unlimited downloads are a thing of the past with Morpheus now that the RIAA is flexing its muscles. The parent company is a juicy target.  The fact that Ares is an open-source project, and has no corporate owners for the RIAA to target continue to make Ares the safest bet, and is quickly pushing making Ares the most downloaded software for music file sharing.
