RIAA still against filesharing, OK with CD ripping

January 4th, 2008 by vanalli

The Internet has been rife with stories this week about how the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been suing people for copying their CDs to their computers. Although we’re not fans of the RIAA, who have been known to sue grannies for filesharing, this story got a bit out of hand.

The RIAA is continuing to sue people for filesharing, but it is not going after people for copying their CDs to PCs. What is happening is that the RIAA is targeting people who copy their CDs and place them in shared files that can then be utilized by filesharing programs.

The RIAA would have millions more targets if ripping CDs was outlawed, but thankfully this isn’t the case. You still can’t get away with filesharing, however, as people like Jammie Thomas found out last year.

With something like 30,000 people already sued by the RIAA, chances are that there will be many more cases to come in 2008.
