How do I get my ORDER ID/activation code?
You can get your ORDER ID which is used to activate Ares Vista in two different ways:
- Get the “order id” from the email receipt that you received after purchasing Ares
Vista - Go to http://www.aresvista.com/activation. This interactive screen will show you your activation code. There is
a delay of approximately 10 minutes from the time of purchase until the time this screen can get your order id.
f you have not activated Ares Vista you will see big red letters that say “Free Search Version” and “Click here to
purchase the full version”. To activate, go to http://thankyou.aresvista.com for detailed instructions.
When I try to play a video I see a black screen but I hear sound.
How can I fix this?
Basically the problem is that a codec missing from your installation of Windows (most everyone is missing it). This
codec is needed to play the video from a .avi movie.
Luckily XVID is a free set of codecs that you can download from http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html
So, to recap
- Codec missing
- Download from http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html
- Run the program to install the codec
- Watch movie
I get a message “Media Class Error not registered” when I try to play a video. How do you fix
this?
This is a problem in Windows and not in Ares. Click here for
information on how to fix this.
I cannot connect to the network, what can I do?
One of the two following reasons are likely responsible for your inability to connect to the Ares network:
- You could be running a firewall that’s preventing Ares from connecting properly. If
you are using programs such as Norton, try lowering your security settings. If you have Windows XP, disable the XP
firewall in the systems settings in the control panel. - If you access the Internet through a wireless router such as Linksys or Belkin,
certain ports that Ares requires to connect, can be blocked. In such instances, port forwarding your router will
resolve the issue and open up the blocked ports required by Ares. If you need help with port forwarding your router in
conjunction with Ares, please supply your wireless routers’ brand name and model number in your response to this
message. Note: We require the exact brand name and model number of your router in order to help you properly configure
your router for port forwarding. Contact Support for help.
Why do some things take so long to download?
The speed at which a download takes place is limited by both the bandwidth of the downloader and by the bandwidth of
the uploader. A document cannot by transferred faster than the uploader is capable of sending it, nor can it be
transferred faster than the downloader is capable of receiving it. To Maximise transfer speed chose search results
having more than 2 yellow stars and configure your firewall/router to allow traffic through Ares data port (your data
port is in control panel->transfer->Accept incoming connections on port:)
What if I cannot find what I’m looking for?
If you can’t find your files, you should try again in an hour or two. Users are connecting and disconnecting
constantly, and it’s likely that a user with what you want will connect sooner or later. Just keep trying!
Ares slows down my computer and it is slow to download?
Speeds depend on a lot of things. One particular factor is the settings you have for Ares that controls how much bandwidth you
use, the bandwidth you let others use and how many others can download from your system. We recommend changing the default settings
to those shown in the following image. If you don’t mind downloads being slowr you might also change the download bandwidth.

When I download, it’s often slow.
The speed of your downloads will vary depending on your connection and that of your source. The limit is often one or
the other.
When I open the software, it does not want to connect to the server.
This is due to firewall software on your computer blocking the network traffic. The program cannot connect if your
firewall is blocking access.
If you have Windows XP, disable the XP firewall in the systems settings in the control panel. To do so, simply follow
these directions:
- Click on the START button (lower left corner of Desktop). Go: Start, Settings, Control
Panel. - Double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
- Right-click the connection on which you would like to disable the Firewall, and then
click Properties. - On the Advanced tab, click the box to clear the option to Protect my computer or
network.
You don’t have to completely disable the built-in Windows XP firewall.
When I try to play an audio file, I get “Media Error Class Not Registered”.
When encountering the error “Media Error, Class Not Registered”, go to the “Transfers” section and right-click on the
download that gave you the error, then click “Open External”. This will launch the file in your default media player,
thus, solving the playback issue you experienced within the Ares program. Alternatively, you can always go to the
“Transfers” section and use the “Locate File” tab to open up your Shared Folder and launch the files manually through
your default media player.
How do I transfer downloaded music to my iTunes or iPod?
All downloaded files go automatically into your Ares “Shared Folder”. To locate them, go to the “Transfers” tab and
click on “Locate file”. To transfer files from your “Shared Folder” to your iTunes library, you have two options:
- Click on the “file” tab of your iTunes software and select “add file to library”.
Browse for the file and press “open”. If you want to add a whole folder, select “add folder to library”. Browse for the
specific folder and press “open”. - Launch your iTunes software and “drag and drop” the files from your “Shared Folder”
into your iTunes Library.
